Rubbish
The bin shed is located on the side of the building to the right as you face it from the road. It contains a series of large waste bins into which all eligible rubbish should be placed. Please make sure your bags are put in one of the bins and not just left on the floor. This makes it easier and quicker for the refuse collectors and also reduces the risk of the bags being ripped open by foxes or squirrels which have got in there from time to time. Collections are made very early on Tuesday mornings.
Only domestic/household waste must be put in the bags, all of which must be of the black, green or white plastic type widely available and must be knotted or sealed before placing in the bins. No loose waste should be left in there as, in the case of food waste, this can attract vermin.
Domestic/household waste excludes items like packaging, boxes, furniture, bathroom/ kitchen or other fittings, building waste, old TVs and other electrical equipment, clothing, etc.
Do not dump any of these in the bin shed or, worse, outside around the corner. In the past, some residents have left just about everything and most of it is not classed as household waste. More to the point, the refuse collectors are not contracted to take it away. It is your responsibility to dispose of any such items off-site at public waste and recycling facilities. Don't expect someone else to do it for you.
If you are an owner, you are employing external contractors to alter or re-fit your flat then they must be instructed to dispose of replaced, redundant or surplus materials at a licensed facility. The Managing Agent is authorised to fine and invoice costs to owners if it is shown that they (or any of their tenants where applicable) are in breach of this condition.
Recycling
You are encouraged to recycle as much unwanted material as possible. Wandsworth takes a sensible approach to this by not requiring you to separate out different types of recyclable items but rather to put them all in the same clear bags so long as the contents comply with the list printed on the bags, which are distributed regularly by the Council.
Recycling bags are also collected early on Tuesday mornings. The bags should be left outside the main entrance on the grass verge and should only be placed there on a Monday evening. Please do not put them there at any other time. They should be kept within your flat until these times. Do not leave them in the bin shed or left outside round the corner. They will not be collected and they are your responsibility – not anyone else’s.
Wandsworth facilitates a very good recycling and public waste centre on Smuggler’s Way operated by the Western Riverside Waste Authority (www.wrwa.gov.uk) that is located here, only two miles away.
